The Medically Complex Patient
Treating the medically complex patient who requires extended hospitalization necessitates constant nursing supervision and daily physician visits. Our programs are specifically designed to meet the unique needs of these patients, providing individualized, focused care and therapy. Many medically complex patients have one or more of the following diagnoses: infectious disease, multiple system failure, renal failure, respiratory failure, prolonged surgical recovery, long-term antibiotic therapy, sepsis, cancer, congestive heart failure, pressure wounds, multiple trauma, COPD, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal diseases.
Medical Rehabilitation
The services of our rehabilitation program are provided to all patients. Our individualized, goal-oriented treatment plans are designed to address the physical impairments, cognitive and behavioral difficulties associated with medically complex diseases. Each patient is evaluated upon admission to Mercy Special Care Hospital. Our team of specialized professionals works together with the patient and family to achieve his or her maximum level of functional independence. Our Interdisciplinary team meets weekly to discuss each patients response to treatment and progress. We treat the following conditions: multiple trauma, post-surgical, CVA, spinal cord injury, head injury, general debilitation, cardiac and pulmonary conditions, complicated fractures, post-amputation and degenerative diseases.
Pulmonary Care And Rehabilitation
We offer specialized care for patients with acute or chronic respiratory disorders who may require ventilator weaning, tracheostomy care, and BiPAP/CPAP. Weaning protocols are utilized with our ventilator patients in conjunction with other treatment modalities. Our goal is to restore maximum respiratory and cardiac function and to prevent future complications through specific restorative treatments.
Leading the Nation in Ventilator Weaning
Since 1999, our average ventilator weaning rate has been 86% well above the national benchmark of 56.4% according to the Barlow Respiratory Research Center.
Wound Care Program
At Mercy Special Care Hospital, Nanticoke, we treat all wounds and specialize in State III and State IV wounds caused by vascular or mechanical factors or infection. Our interdisciplinary team of wound care professionals develops a treatment plan designed for patients requiring extensive intervention. Many patients have multi-system health complications and healing their wounds is an important step in the recovery process. Our wound care program focuses on preventing and restoring wound complications and achieving positive outcomes.
Behavioral Health
Our Behavioral Medicine Unit is one of only a few such hospitals in the state with this designation, treating adult and geriatric psychiatric inpatients who require acute care for an average minimum of 25 days or longer. At Mercy Special Care Hospital, Nanticoke, we offer a comprehensive, acute care program specifically designed to stabilize severe, chronic behavioral and/or emotional disorders. Our multi-disciplinary medical team aggressively and fully addresses the physiological, psychological and social needs of each patient as he or she progresses from acute care to pre-morbid health status and regains levels of independence.
